Consideration for hospice care has always been a very difficult decision for Physicians to make. Families all too frequently will not create the impetus or understand the complexities that go along with making such a recommendation. General guidelines exist for various illnesses to help guide you, the Physician along this path. Criteria that are used will be presented in latter discussions for disease specific models.
A mistaken notion has existed in the medical community that hospice care should be rendered when the patient is in his/her final hours of life. This approach misses the months leading up to that moment when patients and families most need that multifaceted support in their home setting. Our Medical Directors and nurses seek to educate and assist the Community Physicians in determining a patient’s appropriateness for hospice care.
Our staff at sacred heart hospice, Phoenix Arizona will visit the patients at any assisted living center in Maricopa County and discuss our hospice care with them.
