Sacred Heart Hospice is committed to the idea that no one should ever die alone. The goal of the Sacred Heart Hospice Vigil Volunteer Program is to connect patients with a volunteer to sit vigil during their final hours. This may be companionship by simply being present with the patients who is dying without family members or friends available or by providing support to family members who need a break from the bedside of their loved one.
Vigil Volunteers are available on an as needed basis (with respect to the volunteer's schedule and location).
Vigil Volunteer Skills
- Good Interpersonal Skills:
Empathy, compassion, and a willingness to help others and to work as a member of the hospice team.
- Good Communication Skills:
Both written and verbal.
Requirements
- Age 18 or over
- A positive approach to life
- Flexibility of schedule
- Sound judgment regarding issues of death and dying
- Ability to work independently with indirect supervision.
- Some travel is required, services are provided in the patient’s home.
Vigil Volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, skills in caring for and communicating with hospice clients and their family. Emphasis is on providing comfort during the dying process.
Volunteers are the heart of Sacred Heart Hospice, Phoenix Arizona that is committed to excellent service of comfort and care to patients requiring hospice care, palliative care or care in assisted living facilities.
